The following thinking is a work in progress, to be fleshed out as all stake holders commentary comes to light. It's taken centuries to develop legal begal thinking and we can't ignore that history. A more detailed discussion is found in soul-mate.org & soul-mate.org/RootFruit-GraceLaw.php
2Ti 1:9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.
Truth In Love
Talk of root and fruit often lapses in to the faith and works debate. But rigor requires drilling down to marrow. Verses which compete for prominence, and competing streams within Christendom, indicate that authentic root and fruit aren't easily decided, often being a work in progress. Rigorously dividing down to marrow becomes important in determining authentic faith and fruit, in any world leading Christian study. Rigor's about building our house on the biblically uncontroversial rock of eternal confidence, rather than sand.
That debate routinely avoids discussing the difficult ambiguous case of Laodicean believers, believers in words rather than both words and deeds. Taking thinking to a logical conclusion often highlights strengths or weaknesses. This is also seen in the infinite 100% test(secondary), and contrasting finite vs infinite thinking, including God endowed purpose or function(foremost).
Always Circumspect Truth In Love
Those who advocate a liberal view of Paul's Galatians topic want to ignore Paul's own statements about godly standards of behaviour, ie keeping Jesus commandments (by obedience to the faith - as per the great commission).
The foregoing isn't advocating impatient lack of mercy. When we lapse in to sin then patience requires godly Eph 5:9 "for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth".
Like we don't run amok when driving on our roads, rather having traffic laws/disciplines to sustain harmonious standards of behaviour now and for all generations to come, (when no longer driving righteously).
1 John 2:5 "But whoever keeps His word, truly the love (agapé) of God is perfected in him."
Gal 6:1
"Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual [& disciplined] restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, [and all selfless lowliness], considering yourself lest you also be tempted." (With prerequisite prayer about challenging matters)
Gal 6:2 "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."
Truth In Love
An aspect of root versus fruit could be the difference between relational people persons (especially women, often right+left-brained) or policy overseers (often males, & left-brained, according to reported medical study/s). In both cases the Bible mentions our own compliance with Eph 5:9 "for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth". We don't achieve lasting adjustments by acting like a bull in a china shop (colloquialism). Lack of people person skills refrains from bullying, favouring low key clarification, or deferring to women of noble biblical character when exemplifying relational & biblical skills, for touching on delicate concerns. Male's often left-brained policy thinking can inform but right+left brained relational skills restore one from blindness, through encouraging & uplifting talks. In that way morale is salvaged, so that optimism is managed for : The Golden Rule Matt 7:12 "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you", (in biblically uncontroversial matters). If roles were reversed how would each of us handle these matters ? We want to win hearts and heads, as discipleship is a labour of love & truth.
